He expressed the hope for Finland to play its constructive role in promoting the healthy and steady development of China-Europe relations.”
As per the readout, among other things, Orpo said:
“Finland is committed to the one-China policy, commends China for its remarkable achievements in development, and appreciates China’s important and constructive role in international affairs. He said Finland is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to jointly uphold world peace and stability. He noted the importance of constructive EU-China relations and said that Finland advocates European strategic autonomy, supports free trade, and stands ready to play an active role in facilitating the proper settlement of trade frictions between the EU and China and the sound development of EU-China relations.”
During his visit to Beijing, Orpo also met with Li Qiang and Zhao Leji. It’s interesting that that report on Zhao’s meeting with Orpo is on the front page, but the report on the meeting with Li is on Page 2. This is despite the fact that the Li meeting was more substantive. I presume this is an editorial call since there’s already a much more important report featuring Li on the page.
Anyway, the report on the Li-Orpo meeting says:
Li said that last year, China and Finland jointly celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. This morning, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Orpo, profoundly summarising the valuable experience of the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations and providing strategic guidance for further deepening China-Finland relations and cooperation. Li Qiang pointed out that this year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period. China is willing to further strengthen the alignment of development strategies with Finland, better leverage the complementary advantages of their economies, fully unleash the potential of bilateral trade, and make good use of platforms such as the China-Finland Joint Committee on Science and Technology and high-tech matchmaking meetings to deepen cooperation in areas such as communications, clean technologies, special shipbuilding, new urban construction, and life and health, achieving a higher level of mutual benefit and win-win results. In advancing Chinese-style modernisation, high-quality development is the primary task, high-level security is an important safeguard, and high-efficiency governance is the key measure for coordinating development and security. From the perspective of high-quality development, whether it is fully stimulating the vitality of various market entities, promoting the efficient allocation of various factors and resources, accelerating high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening and developing new-quality productive forces, or building a strong domestic market and accelerating the construction of a new development paradigm, all require coordinating the relationship between an effective market and a capable government, and continuously improving the efficiency of economic governance. From the perspective of high-level security, at present and for a period to come, China’s economic and social development is in a phase of profound transformation; changes in the external environment, social structure, and social psychology are bringing new challenges to governance in many fields. He then talks about work related to Party-building.
