Before getting to today’s edition, let me cover the two key reports from Saturday and Sunday. Comment: My three big takeaways from these two reports are as follows. First, Xi Jinping doesn’t seem to be too thrilled with the development of the country’s northeastern provinces. In fact, at times, he sounds rather annoyed. For example, at one point, he calls on the region to “actively align itself with national strategic needs, integrate and optimise innovation resources in science and education, and increase investment in research and development, so as to have more key and core technologies.” In essence, he’s telling the regional leadership that they have not done enough to align with national priorities. Later, he also bemoans the talent drain from the region, and points to the need for more infrastructure development. And at one point, he is rather direct in pointing out local officials’ laxity, saying that “it is imperative for the region to be more conscious of its role as a frontier and of opening up.”
